CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The man accused of shooting and killing four law enforcement officers during a gunfight Monday has an extensive criminal history in North Carolina.
Court records show Terry Clark Hughes Jr. Has been arrested dozens of times, has been in and out of jail since the mid-2000s, and has spent nearly two years incarcerated in the state prison system.

WBTV’s Investigation is also raising questions about some of Hughes’ more recent criminal cases, which were dismissed or pending for years in Mecklenburg, Person, and Alamance Counties.
Hughes Jr.’s criminal history reveals a lengthy list of charges, arrests, and time spent in county jails. He’s served just under two years in the North Carolina state prison system.
His most recent period of incarceration ended IN 2013 after he was sentenced as a felon in possession of a firearm, the same charge police said the task force was preparing to arrest him for on Monday.
According to the court records, some of Hughes’ more recent charges between 2020 and 2022 have been dismissed or appear to be stagnant.
A 2021 charge in Mecklenburg County for fleeing and eluding arrest was “dismissed with leave,” according to court records, but is really pending until law enforcement arrested Hughes again for skipping court.
A 2020 charge for driving with a revoked license was dismissed because the Mecklenburg District Attorney’s office was “unable to prioritize prosecution due to the COVID-19 Court Closure.”
WBTV requested a comment from all three District Attorney offices regarding the outcome of the cases. None of the offices provided an on the record statement explaining the reasons for dismissal. District 11 (Person County) DA Mike Waters told WBTV his office was closed because of the death of a colleague and they would respond on Wednesday.

Cops kill us and they get away with it in court just because they have a badge they beat us put charges on us how many people were killed in the custody of police officers specifically white?
