“Take your probabilities and go and do it,” was a key lesson journalist Peter Murtagh took from his bike journey from the southern tip of South America to the northern high of Alaska.
Murtagh, who retired from The Irish Instances in 2019 after which had his deliberate journey delayed by the Covid pandemic, set out in late 2022 from southernmost Chile together with his bike and tent, and filed occasional stories for his former employer.
On Thursday in Hodges Figgis bookshop, on the launch of his e book, From Tip to Prime, Murtagh stated the primary factor he realized from his journey was that he may really do it.
“The world actually is small and you may go wherever with such ease now,” he informed a gathering of household, pals and former colleagues. The second factor he realized was “worry not”.
“I feel being scared about going out into the world since you are frightened of what may occur is such a diminishing factor to do, take your probabilities and go and do it. Age is not any barrier. It’s by no means too late to begin,” he stated.
Earlier “form of retired” RTÉ broadcaster Sean O’Rourke described Murtagh’s e book as “an astonishing piece of labor, a beautiful succession of tales rather well informed”. The writer, he stated, was “one of many best journalists of our time”.
